Architectural Free Zone: Reunion Island and the politics of vegetation

This dissertation examines the ex slave communities district in Reunion Island that produced a specific urbanism, defined as an Architectural Free Zone. The Architectural Free Zone is a urban zone that doesn’t respond to the imposed technical rationality or function via the primacy of vision in urban and architectural planning. The Architectural Free Zone is a radical and pragmatic implementation of escape from the control of the State that is combining built elements and plants.
