Why did the Cuban revolution priorities culture? What Cultural Policy has Cuba adopted re: styles, themes, genres etc. Why were the casasde cultura ( cultural centres) set up and what role do they play in the visual arts of Cuba? How did the ‘special period’ (the time of economic hardship following the demise of the Soviet Union in 1989) affect artists?
Come and discuss these questions and how art is created in Cuba under qualitatively different economic and social conditions with internationally respected Cuban artists.
