How has Trump used stereotypes, misinformation and anxieties about immigration to make him a serious contender for the US Presidency?

How has Trump used stereotypes, misinformation and anxieties about immigration to make him a serious contender for the US Presidency? How are seemingly racist appeals to primarily white voters possible in an era of post-race, colorblind politics? Professor Charles Gallagher is visiting from the United States to deliver his lecture at Goldsmiths. He is from La Salle University Philadelphia, from the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. All comers welcome.

His recent books include: Retheorizing Race and Whiteness in the 21st Century: Changes and Challenges (Routledge 2012).
Rethinking the colour line: Readings in Race and Ethnicity 5th Edition (McGraw Hill 2012).
Being brown in Dixie: Ethnicity and Latino Immigration in the New South (Lynne Rienner 2011).
