Exploring nonlinear dynamics in acoustic and digital instruments

This talk will look at musical instruments, improvisation and experimental compositional practices from the perspective of nonlinear dynamics, examining how the latter can afford particular kinds of musical interactions. The complexity and unpredictability of such processes will be discussed in the context of both acoustic and electronic tools, and related to the possibility of having a relationship with an instrument as opposed to merely controlling one. Such dialogic, two-way relationships are linked to the practices of experimental musicians, free improvisers, contemporary computer musicians, and broader musical trends in late 20th and early 21st century.

Tom will relate this to his recent musical work based around a new synthesis process that he has been developing that exploits the complexity of nonlinear dynamical processes.

TOM MUDD is a musician and doctoral researcher at the Open University and an associate lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London. His research focuses on relationships between software, composition and improvisation, and in particular the role of nonlinear dynamics in interactions with musical tools.

The Music Research Series is designed to help postgraduate students advance their research and careers. The events stimulate exchange, hones skills, facilitates the creation of professional networks and helps to consolidate the department’s postgraduate community, all over a glass of wine! Attendance is strongly recommended for all postgraduate students (MA, MMus and PGR) in Music but of course undergraduates, music researchers, and visitors from across the college and the community are also most welcome to these public lectures.
