Event overview
Based on a holistic exposition and appraisal of Antonio Gramsci's writings relevant to education in neoliberal times, this talk, rather than simply applying Gramsci's concepts to education, argues that education constitutes the leitmotif of his entire oeuvre. In essence, education lies at the heart of Gramsci's conceptualisation of the ancient Greek term 'hegemony' that was used by other political theorists before him. Starting from this understanding, the talk goes on to consider the suitability of Gramsci's theories for a critical pedagogy that can confront neoliberalism in its many forms. This talk is based on Professor Peter Mayo’s recent book ‘Hegemony and Education under Neoliberalism: Insights from Gramsci’ (Routledge, 2015).
Peter Mayo is Professor in Sociology of Education and Adult Education at the University of Malta, and is a Visiting Professor at UCL Institute of Education. He is also a member of the Collegio Docenti for the doctoral research program in education at the University of Verona.
This seminar is free and open to everyone, but prior registration is helpful.
