Poetry reading “I write because my ink must flow like blood. The written must be spoken” Patience Agbabi
Patience Agbabi was born in London to Nigerian parents, but grew up in Wales with white foster parents. Renowned on the spoken word circuit, as well as greatly admired as a ‘page poet’ her debut collection R.A.W. won the 1997 Excelle Literary Award for poetry and Transformatrix (2000) placed her as one of the Next Generation Poets 2004. Her most recent collection, Telling Tales, was shortlisted for the 2014 Ted Hughes Award and Wales Book of the Year 2015. In Telling Tales Agbabi presents a 21st-Century remix of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales retelling all of the stories, from the Miller’s Tale to the Wife of Bath’s in her own poetic style. Celebrating Chaucer’s Middle-English masterwork for its performance element as well as its poetry and pilgrims, Agbabi’s newest collection takes one of Britain’s most significant works of literature and gives it a second life. She is a Fellow in Creative Writing at Oxford Brookes University.
