Ali Smith on the art of the novel
The second in an annual lecture series in which leading authors talk about the art of the novel.
Ali Smith was born in Inverness in 1962 and lives in Cambridge. She is the author of How to be both, There but for, Artful, Free Love, Like, Hotel World, Other stories and other stories, The whole story and other stories, The Accidental, Girl Meets Boy and The first person and other stories. Hotel World was short-listed for both the Orange Prize and the Man Booker Prize and won the Encore Award and the Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year. The Accidental won the Whitbread Award and was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize and the Orange Prize for Fiction. Her most recent novel, How to be both won the Bailey's Prize, the Goldsmiths Prize, the Costa Novel Award, and the Saltire Society Scottish Fiction Book of the Year Award and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Autumn, the first novel of a Seasonal Quartet, appeared in 2016 and has just been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2017. The second in the series, Winter, will be published in November.
The evening will conclude with the announcement of the shortlist for the 2017 Goldsmiths Prize.
