The Musician as Creative Entrepreneur

This lecture will explore ideas centred around the theme of growing musical startups and how to develop a career within today’s dynamic music industry. It will be a practical, hands-on lecture that gives first-hand advice from my own career, which includes performance with over 30 professional orchestras worldwide, movie soundtracks such as The Hobbit, chamber music projects with London Percussion, education projects with the Royal Opera House and London Philharmonic Orchestra and my work with the Arensky Chamber Orchestra, where I am Director of Collaboration.

I will discuss topics such as:

Case study tutorials and research on the strategies employed by emerging musical startups such as Aurora Orchestra London Contemporary Orchestra and Arensky Chamber Orchestra

The importance of social media platforms, artistic strategy and audience interaction

Developing relationships with long term collaborators; how to generate performance opportunities with external promoters, fixers and contacts within the many stands of the industry

CV development, personal promotion and business and enterprise skills such as marketing, identifying funding sources and network building

How to maximise efficiency within working practices through technologies such as Asana, Insightly, Evernote, Xero and GDrive and processes such as creating SOPs to enable admin tasks to be outsourced to virtual PA’s

Ideas for the music education/participation sectors including: advice for quality teaching applications/interviews; how to set up innovative educational strands within musical start-ups; and the importance of online teaching platforms to today’s pedagogue
