Event overview
Celebrate 10 years of Urban Encounters: Join Goldsmiths' artists, photographers and researchers for the UPF annual conference focusing on cities and urban spaces.
Now in its tenth year, the theme of 'Urban Encounters' for 2017 is Cartographies. We explore how we make sense of places through visual and photographic representations, across a variety of global contexts.
This conference rethinks what is meant by ‘critical urbanism’ through a wide range of international artists and theorists whose work is concerned with mapping contemporary city spaces. Speakers also focus on the politics of representation, history and memory, and what counts as knowledge.
This series of talks and presentations can be of interest to a wide audience exploring art, photography, urbanism, social research and cultural activism. Speakers include, Susan Philipsz, Jamila Cooper, Abbas Nokhasteh, Ofri Cnaani, Layla Curtis, Stefano Carnelli, Michelle Henning, Edward Hillel, Claire Holdsworth, and Linda Lai.
The Friday evening before Tate Britain hosts the Urban Photographers' Association (UPA) Annual Lecture 2017, an artist’s talk with the acclaimed international photographic artist Roger Ballen.
'Urban Encounters' is organised in partnership with Tate, Openvizor, Goldsmiths, University of London and the Urban Photographers' Association and is part of UrbanPhotoFest 2017.
