“I get to tell my story, my way and show that people with a learning disability can do anything”
- Ono Dafedjaye, Heart n Soul staff member
See and hear portraits and interviews exploring the last 30 years of learning disability culture and art in South East London in this new exhibition from Heart n Soul, a creative arts charity based in Deptford.
To mark their 30th birthday Heart n Soul recorded 30 interviews with people with and without learning disabilities, including their artists, participants, staff and volunteers. Through the interviews we get an idea of how attitudes towards learning disability culture have changed over the last 30 years. We hear accounts from artists with learning disabilities who were predicted never to walk or talk, but have released albums and perform their music internationally.
Every interview is accompanied by a brand new portrait created by photographer Franklyn Rodgers, also known for the exhibition Underexposed, a series of black and white portraits on display in Peckham, which were controversially removed earlier this year.
These portraits and conversations form the heart of The Big 30 Archive, which also includes records, posters, photographs, songs and music videos produced by Heart n Soul over the last three decades.
The Big 30 Archive will soon be available digitally on The Big 30 website: http://www.thebig30.com
Heart n Soul is an award-winning creative arts company and charity. We believe in the talents and power of people with learning disabilities, providing opportunities for people to discover, develop and share this power and talent as widely as possible.
