Sally Waterman uses photographic text work to explore memory and familial relationships and emotional associations with place.

The Women's Art Library is pleased to extend the showing of this display that surveys the work of Sally Waterman (MA Image and Communication Alumni 1995-1996) contextualized by showing her archives from the Women's Art Library and the box edition of the group exhibition "Voyage Boxed". It includes The Waves (1996) a series of photograph/text works based on Virginia Woolf’s novel, which reflected upon her move from the countryside to the city.
"Journey Home" (2002-2003) is a photographic diary of a series of ritualistic journeys made over a five-month period between London Waterloo station and Ryde Pier Head, Isle of Wight, which was originally commissioned as an installation for a group exhibition and then made into a modular bookwork.
"February" (2011) traces the artist’s catamaran sea journey to the Isle of Wight to attend the funeral of a family friend, with the fleeting seascape representative of her confrontation with loss. This video was featured in "Voyage: Sea Journeys, Island Hopping and Trans-Oceanic Concepts" at Künstlerhaus Dortmund, Germany in 2013, and was subsequently turned into a concertina bookwork for Voyage Boxed (2014) which features editions from all of the exhibition artists.
