Hollywood: a total "whitewash"?

Caucasian actor Ed Skrein recently hit the headlines when quitting the Hellboy reboot, after realising that he was cast to play a Japanese American. He was taking a stand against “whitewashing” – where white actors and actresses represent characters of other ethnicities in Hollywood films.

“It is clear that representing this character in a culturally inaccurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority stories and voices in the arts,” said Skrein.

During this Facebook Live session, Dr Anamik Saha from our Department of Media and Communications will argue that while Skrein’s gesture was laudable, it will require deeper structural change to combat this practice.

After the talk we’ll be holding a Q&A, giving you the opportunity to ask questions about the subject. To access the lecture, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/events/128378601251294.
