Welcome is a Radical Act: presentations, screenings, workshops & performance, exploring the impact of welcome in the lives of migrants and refugees

An estimated 65 million people throughout the world have been forced to flee their homes. The numbers of protracted conflicts have increased. This has created more than 22 million refugees worldwide - but developing countries host over 80 per cent of people.
There are an estimated 118,995 refugees living in the UK. That's just 0.18 per cent of the total population (65.1 million people).

The UK’s reputation, and sense of itself has been knocked by current policies, which have seen the Government not honouring its promises, and a rise in hostility towards migrants and refugees. At the same time, community and arts organizations, individuals and charities, have continued to demonstrate the power of welcome and rituals of hospitality.
The event will consider how to strengthen and spread these acts of welcome, providing a strong counter narrative, including practical workshops to share skills and ideas. We will also Take time to reflect on the context in which this work is taking place, its complexity, and the way forward.

This event at Goldsmith’s will bring together a range of speakers, workshop activities, debate and discussion, for provocation, sharing, invitations to action, and a chance to reflect. Presentations at 2 pm and 6pm, workshops at 3.30 pm, Films at 2 pm and 8 pm

We will share a newly commissioned film to celebrate acts of welcome across the UK.

Confirmed contributors include: Barrister, Hashi Mohammed; Simon McMahon,Research Fellow for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University; Women for Refugee Women; The Horniman Museum's Boat Project; Kathy O'Hare talking about Jungala radio, Student Action on Refugees (STAR); and a screening of Professor Sue Clayton's acclaimed ffilm, Calais Children: a Case to answer

The event will end with the launch of a new DJ night in the Students Union: Stay up Lewisham! when you can dance til 2 am, and continue to network!
