Three researchers from Goldsmiths University of London (Drs Rachel Doern, Jo Lloyd and Vikki Chalklin), representing the areas of entrepreneurship, work psychology and cultural studies, would like to discuss with you the results of an exciting new study they recently carried out on Queer Entrepreneurship.

The session will run for 1.5 hours. In the first 45 minutes we will discuss what entrepreneurship is, the context for the current study, what the study set out to do and what was found regarding the motivations of our entrepreneurs, the features and impact of their businesses. In the last 45 minutes we will take questions, propose a number of talking points and discuss the way forward – e.g., What kinds of business opportunities exist within the trans community and beyond? What can we do to encourage more trans people to start-up businesses? What forms of support are required? What are the most pressing challenges or barriers?

We would like you to be the first audience to share these most interesting results with, in order to see what you think about our findings, have a conversation about important issues arising in the area, and better understand your own views towards what it means to be an entrepreneur and becoming an entrepreneur as a potential career path (or not).

What is queer entrepreneurship?

While most businesses and their respective products and services fail to address the needs and wants of LGBTQ+ communities, queer entrepreneurs are doing things differently. We define queer entrepreneurs as individuals who run their own businesses that have been founded on queer principles of disrupting normative and binary gender/sexuality models and/or who openly provide products/services for a queer market.

What was the study about?

Over 2016 and 2017 the Goldsmiths’ team interviewed several queer entrepreneurs across London, including a number of trans people, who were running businesses with a queer ethos, in order to better understand how these businesses work. These entrepreneurs and their businesses were actively challenging values and practices traditionally associated with start-ups (e.g., making lots of money), and exploiting opportunities to broaden public understanding about gender and sexuality, offering a more positive, inclusive and non-judgemental approach.
