Goldsmiths-IMS Marketing Research Seminar

Abstract:

This research probes the qualitative differences between sharing physical and digital spaces, with a focus on space as an affectively charged notion. While scholars such as Foucault, Lefebvre and Massey have extensively written about the impact of sharing physical spaces, there is little research on how these intersect with the digital layer inherent to metropolitan spaces. This research thus considers the effect that the qualitative differences between these realms have on interactions between groups and individuals. By studying the shared spaces of three ethical consumption communities situated within the London Borough of Camden, this research develops the concept of chorophilia, or love for space, and tells how a multiplicity of spaces can be revived within the digital in the absence of the physical.

Speaker bio:

Dr Vera Hoelscher holds a PhD in Marketing from Royal Holloway, University of London. Her work explores the shared offline and online spaces of ethical consumption communities. She is particularly interested in the qualitative differences between these spaces and how these underpin narratives of resistance in urban settings and beyond.
