Event overview
Costantini explores narrative film as a balance between sound and image, where the soundtrack complements - rather than decorates - the picture.
Gustavo Costantini is a sound designer, editor and academic from Buenos Aires. For the last 15 years he has lectured in film schools and universities throughout Europe, teaching how to consider filmmaking from a sound perspective. As a student of Michel Chion, he has developed an approach that considers filmmaking as a balance between sound and image, where the soundtrack complements - rather than decorates - the picture.
In this one-day masterclass, Gustavo will cover a wide range of topics referencing directors and sound designers such as Walter Murch, Randy Thom, Atom Egoyan and David Lynch. His subjects will include the influence of musique concrete (from Godard to Martel), audiovisual illusion (an analysis of Hitchcock’s The Birds), the locations of sound (onscreen, offscreen, internal subjective), and sound/music and the rhythms of the edit (in the work of Kubrick, the Coens and Von Trier).
Gustavo’s insights apply to all forms of audiovisual production and will be of interest to sound specialists and musicians as well as directors, producers, editors and anyone working in media or the arts. Not to be missed!
