To celebrate International Women’s Day, as part of "Celebrating Women in Sound" we present a concert by Illuminate, shining a light on the work of women composers and performers.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2018, in the centenary year of UK women aged 30 and over in the UK gaining the vote, the Unit for Sound Practice Research at Goldsmiths, University of London and Women in Sound Women on Sound (WISWOS) and are launching Celebrating Women in Sound, a day of sound-related activities featuring the work of female-identifying artists at Goldsmiths. The purpose of International Women’s Day is to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women; perhaps more importantly, the day is a call to action to change the shape of society and to push for gender parity in all areas.

Activity #3: 6.00 – 7.30pm: Evening Concert 1- Illuminate concerts shine a light on the work of women composers and performers from the past and present. The concert will premiere and give multiple performances of works by living composers - Angela Elizabeth Slater, Gemma McGregor, Blair Boyd, Sarah Westwood and Carol J Jones. These works have been written for performers Casisie Mathews (classical guitar), Sabina Virtosu (violin), Késia Decoté (piano) and Gemma McGregor (flute and shakuhachi). These new works will be programmed alongside a wonderful array of repertoire from historical composers such as Morfydd Owen, Amy Beach, Louise Marie Simon, Lili Boulanger and more.
Illuminate is a new project to promote the work of emerging women composers and performers. It also gives a platform for historical repertoire by women composers to sit alongside new works. The project has been set up by Dr Angela Elizabeth Slater, a freelance composer who is a strong advocate of the promotion of women’s music both past and present.
