“Allusion to a Body No Longer Present” is made of four main elements: a stage-like installation, a performance, a conversation room, and two audience-engaging events. The work, created specifically for the Swiss Church, deals with questions of impermanence, legacy and significance, heightened by the location within a church that resembles a white cube. It is composed of a collection of props displayed as an installation within the church. Breathing air mattresses, mounds of wet clay, stacks of drinking glasses, a large mirror, and clothing form the primary elements of the installation; the simple materials alluding to and providing support for performances of creation, sentience, and destruction. These items together act as a trace-like memory of the performance – and will remain present between and after performances.
The script of the performance takes as its point of departure a series of interviews the artists conducted with the varied communities of the Swiss Church congregation on questions of mortality, faith and legacy. Through these conversations, the artists tried to attain to both the universal and the personal. They have then used the words, phrases and ideas from these conversations to create the performance script, which includes selected phrases and excerpts from the interviews, live actions, choreographed movements and interactions with the stage props.
The second-story room above the church offices will become a reading/conversion room. This space, curated to be intimate and welcoming, will provide a neutral environment to discuss the work together, to reflect on the performances, or simply drink tea. The idea was born out of the observation that, exhibitions often lack a comfortable space to reflect, to rest one's body after a long commute, to discuss the show in a welcoming space. The hope is thus to create an ephemeral community space where visitors could pause after the exhibition. There will be comfortable seating provided, research, recordings, and literature relating to the project and, of course, tea/coffee.
Supplementing the performance and ephemera there will be two, para-curatorial events, occurring on two separate days over the course of the exhibition. These seek to enrich the discussion around the work and, in some way, re-activate the space post-performance. The programme is composed of:
1. Film Screening: The Blood of a Poet, Jean Cocteau (1930). March 9th, 7.00pm
2. Artist Talk with Tyler Eash and Sara Rodrigues. Led by co-curator Camille Brechignac. March 10th, 8.00pm
