Please join Hilary Wainwright, Laura Parker, Alex Nunns and Aeron Davis to discuss the arguments and ideas at the heart of Hilary’s new book: A New Politics From the Left.
Millions of people passionately desire a viable alternative to austerity, authoritarianism and fear. They reject both corporate capitalism and an elite political system over which they have no control, but they are skeptical of the traditional weapons of the left: seizing state power and devising top-down solutions. They are inventing a new politics based on principles of participatory democracy, cooperation and self-government.
In this urgent and original polemic, activist and academic Hilary Wainwright shows that this new politics must start from sharing the tacit knowledge and creativity of each individual. Power should not be exercised as domination, the imposition of paternalistic rule by well-meaning experts, but as a collaborative exercise in nurturing and asserting the transformative capacity of the many.
Hilary Wainwright is founder and currently co-editor of Red Pepper and a Fellow of the international think tank for progressive politics, the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam. A leading voice of the British Left, she is a pro-Corbyn campaigner and an activist in Momentum.
Laura Parker recently moved from being Jeremy Corbyn’s private secretary to taking over as National Coordinator for Momentum. Before that she spent more than ten years working in the NGO and charity sector.
Alex Nunns is author of The Candidate: Jeremy Corbyn’s Improbable Path to Power, winner of the 2017 Bread and Roses Award for radical publishing.
Aeron Davis is Professor of Political Communication and Co-Director of Goldsmiths Political Economy Research Centre. His most recent book is Reckless Opportunists: Elites at the End of the Establishment.
