Cities of Light: London - a symposium on photography and urbanism - 14 July 2018

What are the relationships between urban photography and the politics of ‘the fake?'
In a time of shifting ocular, social and spatial perspectives what constitutes ‘the real?'

Photography has for some time struggled with core questions around how the world of experience and perception relates to the evolving multiplicity of images and technologies circulating 'out-there' in the world. As a result, philosophers, historians, artists and urbanists have become increasingly interested in how mediation, selection and framing intersect with visual representations of so-called truth and objectivity.

The 2nd UPA ‘Cities of Light’ symposium will highlight case studies through a range of subjects such as street photography, urban design, communities, the politics of change and gentrification. In addition, audio-visual presentations will question, challenge and expand on key issues relating to what is 'fake' or 'real' in politically engaged photography.

Speakers and contributors include: Peter Bennett (Urban Photographers Association / University of West London), Laura Cuch (Urban Photographers Association / University College London), Gill Golding (Urban Photographers Association / Goldsmiths, University of London), Paul Halliday (Urban Photographers Association / Goldsmiths, University of London), Tanya Houghton (Urban Photographers Association), Bas Losekoot (Urban Photographers Association), Alma Tischler Wood (Artist) and John Wood (Goldsmiths, University of London)

#CitiesofLight is a series of symposia organised by the UPA - The Urban Photographers Association taking place in Europe in 2018/19. Partners include: The Centre for Urban and Community Research (CUCR), Goldsmiths, University of London, The Sorbonne, Paris, The Photographers' Gallery, London, Culturgest, Lisbon, Institute of Art History of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and Openvizor.
