The Complete Promise features 6 photographs on perspex depicting the 1990s ‘credit card’ culture-defining generations displaced by the Partition in India living in London.
Reflecting on the post-colonial diaspora this exhibition offers the opportunity to revisit “The Complete Promise” made in the early 1990s. Symrath Patti is a featured artist in the Women of Colour Index in the Women's Art Library. The photographs explore how the Asian diaspora body is the site of colonial conflict. The artist writes:
"My generation is caught between cultures as we also are subject to the ideology of British monoculture of “British values”. “The Complete Promise” is produced from this standpoint. We can never fit into the British establishment or within our own communities, and as outsiders, we are moved to define a sense of belonging. Today I celebrate that Asian/Black women and men claiming space to write ourselves into history on our own terms. To create our sense of being."
