Tracing the invisible line of South London's future Power Tunnel from Kidbrooke to Eltham
As part of our series of monthly Infrastructural Explorations in which we consider the impact of urban infrastructure on the landscape and vice versa, you are invited to join us on our upcoming walk. It follows the invisible line of London’s new power tunnels which are currently being bored 60m below street level in response to the city’s ever growing demand for electricity. The tunnels carry 400kV transmission cables and connect existing and new substations with the first phase being completed earlier this year, and works on the second phase about to start to connect Wimbledon with Hurst, passing right underneath New Cross.
We will walk the route of part of the future Power Tunnel 2 from Kidbrooke to the Eltham Substation (near Falconwood station). The route is approximately 3 miles and will be on a mix of paved and unpaved paths. Please bring weather-appropriate clothes, snacks and water.
If you are interested in joining us or have any questions, please get in touch.
