On the influence of creativity on complex-word formation and complex-word interpretation

Speakers: Prof. Lívia Körtvélyessy and Prof. Pavol Stekauer, P.J. Šafárik University, Kosice

GoldLingS: new research in linguistics

We welcome Prof. Lívia Körtvélyessy and Prof. Pavol Stekauer to give the first GoldLingS Seminar of the new academic year. They will be discussing their work on complex-word formation and interpretation and reporting on their most recent project:

'This paper presents new insights into the way in which language users of unequal creativity characteristics form and interpret complex words.

We report on a project covering two different age groups (250 secondary school and 250 university undergraduates). Respondents undertook the Torrance Test of Figurative Thinking, based on four indicators of creativity: elaboration, fluency, flexibility and originality. Each indicator was evaluated and both age groups were then further divided into two subgroups. Subsequently, all the respondents were tested for the formation and meaning-predictability of potential complex words.

Conclusions are drawn on the interrelatedness between the four creativity indicators and word-formation and meaning predictability.'

A full abstract is available on the GoldLingS webpage.

The seminars are open to all staff and students.
