Anthony Joseph and Fred D’Aguiar discuss their relationship with the history, music and literature of the Caribbean and read from their new books

Anthony Joseph left Trinidad for London in his mid twenties. A poet, musician and lecturer, he holds a PhD in Creative and Life writing, and is the author of four poetry collections and the novel The African Origins of UFOs (2006). His new novel Kitch, published in June, is a multi-faceted, fictionalized life of the calypso artist Lord Kitchener. He is currently the Colm Toibin Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of Liverpool.

Born in south London, Fred D’Aguiar grew up in Guyana and returned to the UK in his teens. He has written poetry, fiction, plays and essays. His new poetry collection, Translations for Memor, ranges from classical philosophy to C.L.R. James, from Asia and Europe to the new world, and concludes with tributes to Derek Walcott and Kamau Brathwaite; his most recent novel, about Jonestown, is titled Children of Paradise (2014). He teaches at UCLA where he directs the undergraduate creative writing programme.
