Docklands Light Railway

As part of our series of monthly Infrastructural Explorations in which we consider the impact of infrastructure on the urban landscape and vice versa, you are invited to join us on our upcoming walk.

For this Infrastructural Exploration we draw inspiration from the Situationist International, navigating the DLR in a playful-constructive way in order to examine the impact of its infrastructure on the urban environment through which it passes.

The Docklands Light Railway is an automated, thus driverless system which was built to serve the redeveloped Docklands in East London and has been in operation since 1987. Since then it has had numerous extensions, creating a network of 24 miles of tracks and 45 stations. As Doreen Massey has demonstrated, we will "treat it like a funfair, its tinny precariousness making it feel even more like a ride in a fairground in and against the amazing concrete and glass" (Massey 2007:29).

We are meeting on December 5th at 2PM in front of the Lewisham DLR Station from where we will start our ride by throwing a dice to determine our next stop. Wherever we alight, we will take a moment to explore the immediate surroundings. The Exploration will finish at 4PM at a destination to be decided by the dice. Please bring water, snacks, and weather appropriate clothing. Make sure that you tap in with your Oyster Card or other ticket. Unfortunately we are unable to reimburse travel costs.

We recommend to read Massey's Capital Delight as preparation for this Exploration...
Massey, D. (2007) ‘Capital Delight’, in World City. Polity, pp. 29–53.

... and to watch this video for a brief outline of the Situationist International:

If you would like to join us, send us a quick email so we know who to wait for or if you have any questions please get in touch with either Laura or Louise.

We look forward to sitting with you in the front cabin!
