Event overview
Selections from the Margaret Hall-Townley Collection
At this session we will look at a selection of material from the personal collection of Margaret Hall-Townley, now held at the Goldsmiths Textile Collection.
After completing a Foundation Course at Bristol, Hall-Townley took a Diploma in Art and Design at Goldsmiths under Constance Howard before returning to Bristol to do a teaching qualification. As well as being an Artist, she taught at Goldsmiths where she was the Curator from the 1980s until 2008 of what became the Goldsmiths Textile Collection. Hall-Townley was driven to collect textiles out of pure excitement about the use of thread, colour, texture, and a curiosity for the impetus behind their making. Collecting provided her with a much deeper understanding of textile uses and people’s needs in different social situations, especially that of women. As a student, Hall-Townley collected as a way to learn the art of making and she continued to collect material for the purpose of teaching.
