The Chromatic Ecology of Munchkinland

In his paper, David will discuss four notions that feature in many Western accounts of the chromatic: colour as a fall from grace; colour as a loss of consciousness or rationality; colour as an intimation of paradise; and colour as a fleeting, unreliable event.

These conceptions can also be identified as key motifs in the film The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1939). Munchkin chromatics may appear strange but at the same time they are consistent with many other accounts of colour, from Aristotle to Aldous Huxley by way of Paul Cezanne and Roland Barthes.

Lecture at 6pm, followed by drinks reception until 8pm.

Part of a series celebrating Goldsmiths academics who have recently become professors: search "Goldsmiths Inaugural Lectures 2019" for other presentations.

Free event, all warmly welcome.
