Join us for a showcase of South East Asian short films from Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
TUESDAY NIGHT SCREENING.
Aiming to increase the awareness of South East Asian screen culture, this film screening event helps to raise the profile of South East Asian filmmakers. Each short film reflects a current social issue in the country.

8. MALAYSIA
Cage (Sangkar)

Sangkar tells a story about a young girl who falls in love with a schoolmate and eventually makes the ultimate sacrifice to marry into his family. The short film is part of the HerStory Film Project which brings together five women artists to make five short films exploring various issues impacting women.
9. CAMBODIA
Two Girls Against the Rain

How two women fell in love, survived the Khmer Rouge and transformed a community. Two women, Soth Yun and Sem Eang, met and fell in love in one of the Khmer Rouge regime’s notorious forced labour units. After the Khmer era, during which two million Cambodians were killed, they decided to live together in the province of Takeo, despite the disapproval of their families and the local community. As Cambodia inches towards acceptance of LGBT people, Yun and Eang, who are now middle-aged and raising several of their nephews and nieces, want to get married.

Below the Boulevard

A story about a 60-year-old disabled Vietnam war veteran who lives on an old boat with his family in Ho Chi Minh. An ex-soldier who was heavily disabled during the war, he is haunted by its terrors, yet he is filled with gratefulness in his present life although their peaceful life barely meets basic living conditions. His only comfort in the midst of all the harshness is found in the hope for a better future for their young daughter.

Auntie Maam Has Never Had A Passport

In 2014, Thailand was torn apart by mass demonstrations that resulted in the umpteenth military takeover. Not the airiest of backgrounds for a playful, political satire. Auntie Naam is a foot masseuse but sometimes acts in independent films. One day, she is invited abroad to a film festival.
