Performance artists Bryony Gillard, Hattie Godfrey and Tyler Eash will be presenting their distinct responses to the specifics of the Georgian house that this time fosters us.
“a place that fosters us.” started in december of 2018 as a nomadic curatorial project that temporarily dwells in unused living spaces. For this second iteration, Bryony Gillard, Hattie Godfrey and Tyler Eash will be presenting their distinct artistic responses to the specifics of the Georgian house that this time fosters us throughout a night of performances.
The initial hosting gestures from the owners of these spaces have set the guidelines for our curatorial vision. In this way, we approach the apartments or houses as the main framing devices; that which provides the core information bringing together diverse, sometimes even apparently disparate, artworks. But this is precisely what we are interested in:
How does the richness of histories contained within these unused living spaces can allow us to connect practices and themes that otherwise would likely remain unrelated within the context of white cubes or other more formally designated art spaces?
At one level, for this performance event, there's an interest in the Georgian house as that which its structure has been adapted again and again to serve different notions of family and gender roles: the house where a family works towards yet fails to be an ideal nuclear family, the same house that at some point is adapted into a brothel but also later on, a student boarding house. At another, the house which its grandiose yet cheap aesthetic incites us to reflect on appearances and experiences of authenticity and fakeness. All these varied aspects of its history and present aesthetic are further complemented with the autobiographies of each one of the artists: their own personal experience of class, gender, and family/home.
