Dr Rahaf Alabar, Assessment Manager, Cambridge Assessment

This talk introduces a research-based framework for assessing communicative proficiency in Arabic language given its sociolinguistic diglossic situation. The framework is intended primarily for the UK Higher Education context where Arabic is taught for academic or professional purposes. It identifies features of Arabic that reflect the diglossic situation and actual language use, recognising the importance of this in relation to the selection of tasks that any assessment tool would contain. Setting interaction as its central construct, the framework adopts a language-cultural approach to Arabic instruction.
