Sounds of the City: Street Technology & Public Space

The warm-up session is scheduled for Thursday, April 4th, with a panel to be hosted at Palazzo Giusso at 4 pm and a photo exhibition plus musical session to be hosted at the Kestè Art Bar, located just out of Palazzo Giusso (the headquarter of the Orientale University of Naples), to run from 7 pm to midnight.

The main conference entitled “Sounds in the City – Street Technology and Public Space” will be on Friday, April 5th, 9.30 am to 6.30 pm at Palazzo Du Mesnil. Panels are organized into 90-minute time-slots with some to run in parallel. As such, participants are expected to time their contributions to a maximum of 15 minutes, in order to allow for some constructive discussion at the end. We’ll have keynote lectures by Professor Louis Chude-Sokei (Boston University) and by Dr Sonjah Stanley-Niaah (University of the West Indies, Mona).

The day will continue with practice-based activities plus a dancehall session with local and international performers TBA to be hosted at Scugnizzo Liberato, a grassroots community centre SSO is partnering with for this event, to run from 8.30 pm to 1 am. Food and drinks will be available for sale.

The closing act on Saturday, April 6th will be hosted at CSOA Officina 99 the most representative grassroots venue for sound system culture in Naples. The program will include a workshop, film screening and discussion from 5 pm; plus a sound system session from 10 pm to 5 am featuring national and international guests such as Mad Professor, Sister Aisha and more TBA. Food and drinks will be available for sale from 8 pm.

The aim of the program is to provide the chance for international researchers to experience the local sound system scene in the grassroots venues that provide the infrastructure of the culture in Naples, stimulating a fruitful exchange between the academic community and local practitioners, which has always been SSO’s main purpose. These venues are run by activists on a community-based model without any institutional funding or support. For this reason, the events will have a small admission fee (3 to 5 euros) in support of the venues and of the social activities they host.

We suggest you to book your accommodation in the city centre (“historical centre” or “centro storico” on the main booking platforms) in order to witness the beauty of the ancient town, enjoy its notoriously hectic street-life, have a handful of the world most renowned pizzerias at hand, and be at walking distance from most of the venues included in the program.
