Event overview
Please join us for an Art Research Day on Friday, 31 of May, where we will explore ideas and practices resonating with those in the book Poetics of Relation by Édouard Glissant.
Our aim will be to work together, discursively, in order to think through what is at stake with a ‘poetics of relation’ today, and how we might facilitate this as artist-researchers.
Throughout the day, invited guests will speak for 20 minutes, leading out of the presentation with a thought, question or problematic/provocation. This will, in turn, be taken up by group discussion for 30 minutes as a means to address and extend the thought, question or problematic/provocation.
The effect of the day will be cumulative, with small group discussion organised in such a way that, over the course of the day, everyone will have an opportunity to speak with everyone else. In the last session, we will come together as a large group, drawing together thoughts from the day and examining what risks have been realised.
Invited guests include (in order of appearance):
Michael Archer
Rehana Zaman
Nisha Ramayya
Olivier Marbouef
Julian Henriques.

To conclude – and to celebrate! – the day, we will move back to the main Goldsmiths College campus for an evening performance by Linton Kwesi Johnson
followed by drinks.

We highly recommend you read the whole book, but here are recommendations for particular selections: ‘Errantry, Exile’ as a way into Glissant’s ideas; the writing in ‘The Black Beach’ is extraordinary; the section on ‘Distancing, Determining’ is very clear in terms of the theoretical thrust of the book; ‘For Opacity’ is a crucial, touchstone text.
This event is part of the Future of Arts Research activities, hosted by the Mountain of Art Research and generously supported by the CHASE research consortium.
