Join Professor Brian Cathcart, of Kingston University, who challenged The Times’ stories, for a debate on misrepresentation in the media.
Professor Brian Cathcart was specialist adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport when it was investigating press standards and the phone-hacking scandal. In 2011, with Martin Moore, director of the Media Standards Trust, he launched Hacked Off to press for a public inquiry into hacking and press standards. He appeared before The Leveson Inquiry twice.
The event will be chaired by Professor Angela Phillips, of the Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths. Professor Angela Phillips gave evidence at the Leveson enquiry and is one of the founders of Media Reform UK. She has over 40 years experience as a journalist and is the author of and contributor to several books and academic articles. Her most recent book is Misunderstanding News Audiences: Seven Myths of the Social Media Era, co-authored with Eiri Elvestad of Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge. She is the winner of Philosophy Now’s 2019 Award for Contributions in the Fight Against Stupidity.
