Ensemble in Residence the Ligeti Quartet with soprano Ella Taylor, perform works by Robin Haigh, Patricia Alessandrini and Alban Berg in the George Wood Theatre.

From hidden romantic messages, metacommunication to the hauntingly beautiful howling of dogs, this programme explores the infinite and multi-faceted nature of communication - the need to express, to find a voice and the desire to understand.

Alessandrini grapples with what she feels has become passive and negative interaction in the constant flow of commercial images and sounds encountered in public and private spaces. Her reaction is to dissect one of the central works of the early 20th century repertoire, Alban Berg’s Lyric Suite, and to compel performers and audience to find active engagement within this deeply personal music. In the 2nd half of the concert, the Lyric Suite will be performed in its entirety, including the soprano part in the Finale which completes the melodic line and reveals an extract of De Profundis Clamavi (Baudelaire) in the most desolate, tumultuous climax of the piece. This soprano part was found 40 years after Berg’s death and and proved to be yet another of the plethora of hidden messages in this piece which became a love letter to Hanna Fuchs-Robettin.

The Quartet have commissioned BASCA prize-winning composer (and Goldsmiths alumnus) Robin Haigh to write a substantial new quartet for this programme. The piece is in traditional four-movements structure - one inspired by howling Samoyed dogs, another inspired by the Florence Foster Jenkins-like scat singer Shooby Taylor, a ‘lullaby’ movement which make use of childhood instruments (recorders, music boxes etc.) and the finale, a fusion of folk-fiddle and heavy metal.

This concert is free to all! There will be a bar, and the Quartet will be fundraising for their new commissioning fund "Making New Music", so do bring your wallets!
