In this second event of our Industry Insight Staff Career Talk series, Philip Palmer and Nigel Bristow, two members of practice staff in the Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies, will tell their stories and answer questions about their practice and careers.

Philip Palmer is active as a creative practitioner across a broad range of media. He has had eight SF/fantasy novels published and his SF/horror novella 'Morpho' was published in early 2019.

He is a prolific radio dramatist and the third series of his Radio 4 Cold War thriller 'Keeping the Wolf Out' was broadcast in 2019 and he is currently working on a fourth series. He has an executive producer credit on the feature film 'Sideshow' starring Les Dennis, currently in post production. And he is writer and co-producer of the Welsh film noir 'Into the Valley', directed by Chris Crow, also currently in post production.

Nigel Bristow is a writer and director. He has directed over a dozen different primetime TV dramas and his prize-winning films have played in festivals and television channels all over the world. He has been commissioned by FilmFour, C4, BBC, UKFC, BFI, NIFC, NI Screen and the Arts Council.

Films as director include: 'Control' (winner of “Action on Film” USA Louis Mitchell award), 'Hide' (theatrical release with 'This Filthy Earth'); 'Everybody's Gone' (Gold Plaque at Chicago); 'Dah Dit Dah' (Best of The Fest, Edinburgh);' Unsound' (an interactive film, premiere at SXSW). Screen-writing commissions include: 'Ripley Bogle' (C4), 'Kloxx' - with Tony Grisoni (UKFC), 'Angel West' - with Tony Grisoni (Tall Stories) and 'Little Hours' (Crow Foot Films).

He has acted opposite Vivian Stanshall in the Tale of the Long Sky; terrified audiences with his binaural nightmare, The Ever-Expanding Cabinet of Unnameable Horrors; and brought theatre to the terraces of Millwall Football Club - and lived to tell the tale. He is a former Irish sabre champion, but his fencing is a little rusty these days!
