An online interview and Q&A with playwright, editor, theatre critic, poet and Goldsmiths Theatre and Performance alumna, Nabilah Said.

‘Goldsmiths Connect Presents’ is an event series that features alumni discussing the most pertinent issues impacting their sector and our global community - this event will look at the arts in times of crisis and will take place on Zoom.

In a year of unprecedented changes, we are seeing every sector question its role and future. One such sector is the arts, which occupies a precarious place in our collective imagination.

In a public survey featured in the Singapore Sunday Times, 71% deemed ‘artists’ as ‘non-essential’ ‘to meet basic needs of human survival and wellbeing’.

But as Nabilah Said aptly writes, during times of crisis many of us turn to art forms such as theatre, music, poetry and television for hope, entertainment, to make sense of our feelings and remind us of our humanity.

How can we reconcile these conflicting positions on art’s importance during these urgent and changing times? What is it like to be an artist and creator when your value is being debated?

These are questions that Nabilah will explore in conversation with Alumni Relations Assistant and Goldsmiths MA student, Ella Asheri.

You are encouraged to propose questions and themes when you register for the discussion – and we will be taking live audience questions during the event.

PS. If you haven’t already, please sign up to the Goldsmiths Connect platform to keep up-to-date about the series and all things Goldsmiths or use it to network with fellow staff, students and alumni.
