New books by Luiza Sauma and Sophie Ward tell stories of love and loss across the universe. They discuss their philosophy and process

Luiza Sauma was born in Rio de Janeiro, raised in London and worked at the Independent on Sunday before becoming a novelist. Her first novel, Flesh and Bone and Water, received widespread critical acclaim; her new one, Everything You Ever Wanted, is partly set on an imaginary planet called Nyx. She has an MA in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths, where she won the Pat Kavanagh Award.

Sophie Ward is an actor and writer. In 2018 she won the Royal Academy Pin Drop Award for her short story ‘Sunbed’. A Marriage Proposal; the importance of equal marriage and what it means for all of us was published by Guardian short books in 2014. Her first book of fiction, Love and Other Thought Experiments, out this month, began life as a creative writing PhD at Goldsmith
