The Strangeness of Dub: Edward George in conversation with Dhanveer Brar and Louis Moreno
Edward George writes "Dub is strange. A musical process and a sub-genre formed in the early 1970s and pioneered by Clement Dodd, Sylvan Morris, Lee Perry, King Tubby, Scientist, Jah Shaka and The Mad Professor, dub takes place through a kind of violence, an act of reducing archival audio documents to fragments and traces, yet is associated, in its sound system context, with communal reverie and meditative states.”
Over the past year George’s radio show ‘The Strangeness of Dub’ (broadcast by Morley College Radio) has drawn on critical theory, social history, animated by a deep and wide cross-genre musical selection and live dub mixing, to explore the dimensions of dub's strangeness. In this talk George will be in conversation with Dhanveer Brar and Louis Moreno to draw out some of the concepts and arguments that are emerging from this extraordinary show.
