Goldsmiths Writers' Centre presents...‘How to Seed Earth’: an evening of ecopoetry with Poetry London

This event is sponsored by Poetry London.

In recent decades, Anglophone poetry has become an urgent frontier in the wider dialogue around climate and environmental crises. ‘Ecopoetics’ is a broad but perhaps necessary term that has emerged to define the practice of a range of poets, writing from across the aesthetic and cultural spectrum, who seek to think through the demands of environmental justice in their work. In the opening week of the COP26 Climate Change Conference, Poetry London is excited to host an evening of readings and discussions with three of the most vital contemporary voices in this field: Khairani Barokka, Maria Sledmere, and Zakia Carpenter-Hall. Through their creative and critical practice, these writers help us to imagine planetary futures beyond the extractive, colonial power structures that have brought us to this point of emergency. In their various ways, all are actively and fruitfully engaged with the challenge captured in a phrase from Barokka’s poem ‘Hello, Sequelae’: ‘How to Seed Earth’.

Speakers: Khairani Barokka, Maria Sledmere and Zakia Carpenter-Hall

Chair: Dai George
