Reframing ELF-based pedagogy within decoloniality: a view from Brazil

Abstract:
In recent years, decolonial thinking has influenced English language teaching in countries from the Global South, such as Brazil. Such movement has strengthened ELF as a pedagogical perspective better suited to reflect the move away from eurocentrism reflected in conceptualizations that draw on nativeness and standardization from the Global North. Reframing ELF-based pedagogy within decoloniality implies critical, contextual and localized interpretations, making ELF part of a performance that is inherently fluid. In this talk I will address the tensions arising from fluidity x standardisation in language teaching, considering the Brazilian educational policy that endorses an ELF oriented curriculum.
