Dr. Barbara Pinelli (University of Roma 3)

This presentation deals with the concept of vulnerability in the politics of asylum, shedding light on the ambiguities which encompass this concept in refugee humanitarianism. Taking to some international humanitarian protocols focused on vulnerability and on the ways in which gendered violence in forced migration is coded, it investigates how these concepts have been used to govern migration, and have been played out as moral criteria through which the receiving countries establish taxonomies between ‘deserving refugees’ and migrants not deserving protection.

Bio: Barbara Pinelli is Lecturer and Researcher in Anthropology at the University of Rome Tre. She is specialized in forced migration studies and the anthropology of gender. HShe is engaged in feminist and antiracist debates, and in promoting the public role of research mainly through the Asylum Research Center ESCAPES, (Univeristy of Milan) a network of researchers, activists, and artists.

The event is organised in the frame of the project "Traces of mobility, solidarity & violence", supported by "Global Issues – Integrating Different Perspectives on Cultural Heritage and Change. with the support of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo under the call Global Issues – Integrating Different Perspectives on
Cultural Heritage and Change).
