Performance Research Forum hosts a range of events, talks and presentations by established and early-career researchers and practitioners in theatre and performance.

‘Otto Harbach and the Birth of the Integrated Musical’

Rodgers and Hammerstein are recognized as having pioneered the “integrated musical”—a musical in which the songs and dances further the action. This talk reveals how that distinction actually belongs to Hammerstein’s mentor, Otto Harbach, who developed his own concept of integration, and his own form of musical storytelling, as early as 1910. Through an analysis of Harbach’s life and work, this talk reveals how Harbach modernized musical theatre and paved the way for Rodgers and Hammerstein as well as Hammerstein’s protégé, Stephen Sondheim.

Bradley Rogers is Lecturer in Musical Theatre and Performance at Goldsmiths. His book, The Song Is You: Musical Theatre and the Politics of Bursting into Song and Dance, was a finalist for the George Freedley Award for the Best Book on Live Theatre and Performance, and an Honorable Mention for the Barnard Hewitt Award for Excellence in Theatre History.
