Event overview
Experience the rise and fall of chess genius Bobby Fischer. A musical journey from prodigy to champion to the wilderness.
At the height of the Cold War, American Bobby Fischer beat Soviet Boris Spassky to become World Chess Champion. This was front page news all over the world. Game 6 of the match, the most beautiful game of chess ever played, was Bobby's finest moment. It was downhill from there. Exiled, stateless, fuelled by conspiracy theories, alienated from his family, Bobby died in Iceland - the place of his victory - at the age of 64. 64, the number of squares on a chess board. Was he the King more sinned against than sinning?
Goldsmiths' BA Musical Theatre Year 2 students have been immersed in a performance laboratory exploring ways to tell this extraordinary story, based on a rehearsal script by playwright and lecturer Danny Braverman. These performances are an opportunity to witness the first unveiling of this project.
