Weaponisation of Sexual Violence in Conflict: Panel discussion on State brutality, Power and Gender-based Violence

Using sexual violence as a weapon has become a prevalent strategy to be used by autocratic states to silence men and women. Hosted by Goldsmiths, University of London, this Q&A webinar is composed of 3 prominent women scholars discussing and reflecting on the use of sexual violence as a military tool in war, revolution and protests in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Rwanda. The audience will be invited to pose their question to the panelists in advance via Eventbrite registrations.

Panelists:
Dr Nadia Aghtaie is a Senior Lecturer in Gender and Violence at the University of Bristol, School for Policy Studies, Centre for Gender and Violence Research. One strand of Nadia's research expertise focuses on gender violence, coercive control and spiritual abuse. One of her recent works explored the conceptualisation of justice by practitioners working with Muslim, Catholic and Jewish victims/survivors of domestic violence. Dr Nadia Aghtaie will discuss 'Sexual violence and rape in Iran'.

Dr Nazand Begikhani is Honorary Senior Research Fellow, University of Bristol and Vincent Wright Chair 2019/2020 & Visiting Professor at Sciences Po, Paris. She is also a poet and advocate for human rights. Dr Nazand Begikhani will dicuss 'Sexual & Gender-based Violence as a war strategy in Iraq and Syria'.

Dr Julia Viebach is a Senior Lecturer in the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol, Centre for Gender and Violence Research. Her research focuses on violence, memory and transitional justice. She is the curator of the award winning Kwibuka Rwanda exhibition and Traces with the Past case display at Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum. Dr Julia Viebac will dicsuss 'Wartime sexual violence during genocide - Rwanda’s long road to justice'.
