Dr Jess Aslan presents her research exploring interactive and generative tools and collaboration with computers.

This talk will present some of my research exploring interactive and generative tools, and collaboration with computers. When working with new digital tools, we often a) use premade tools and b) combine an assemblage of these tools for expression. I will be discussing how the practice of sustained work with (and destruction of) tools created by others is a rich area for individual and collaborative creativity, whilst discussing how reflection on process can also lead to transparency regarding how they are coded or modelled.

Deconstruction of collaborative hierarchies is also a relevant area of research, in particular the impact that incorporating algorithms has on collaborative workflow and process. I will show this through examples of my work past and present, examining bespoke algorithmic composition frameworks, live performance systems facilitated by interactive software and machine learning tools.

About the speaker

Dr Jess Aslan is a composer and performer working in computer assisted music. Her practice examines the aesthetic implications of computers and their languages in musical composition and performance.

Currently her research is focused on the generation and facilitation of musical material using machine learning, working on a number of projects that examine the spaces between different algorithmic assemblages and how to link them. This includes live performance, audiovisual composites and data-led sound installations.

Jess has collaborated with collectives, bands and as a solo artist across Europe and has presented work at conferences including Sonorities, International Computer Music Conference, International Festival for Innovation in the Performing Arts, Conference in Interdisciplinary Musicianship, ISSTA.
