Following on from their composer workshop in the afternoon, the flute, cello and piano trio give an evening concert of 20th and 21st century works.

Uncharted Territory: an evocative journey exploring the musical terrain of hidden gems for flute, cello and piano. The programme is infused with resonances of nature, landscape and birdsong, including a commissioned work by Freya Waley-Cohen, 'Glass Flowers', set alongside George Crumb’s seminal 'Voice of the Whale' for Three Masked Players.

Performed by Sarah O'Flynn (flute), Clare O’Connell (cello) and Roderick Chadwick (piano), they have worked together since 1996 as duo recitalists and members of Chroma, having premiered innumerable new pieces internationally.

Programme:
Messiaen - Vocalise
Tann - Llef
Lutyens - Prelude for piano. Op.126 No.3 Starlight
Howell - Spindrift
Messiaen - Le Merle Noir
Waley-Cohen - Glass Flowers
L.Boulanger - Nocturne
Beamish - Iasg
Crumb - Vox Balaenae for Three Masked Players

Uncharted Territory is generously supported by the Marchus Trust, the RVW Trust, the Hinrichsen Foundation and the Ambache Charitable Trust.

Roderick has performed at some of the world’s great venues and festivals, and written about and recorded Messiaen’s music. In 2018 he published Messiaen’s ‘Catalogue d’oiseaux’, From Conception to Performance (CUP), co-authored with Peter Hill, and he was artistic advisor to the Royal Academy of Music for their Messiaen centenary celebrations in 2008. He is currently recording the Catalogue book by book for the Divine Art label, alongside thematically-linked repertoire. He teaches at the Academy and was made Reader of the University of London in 2013.

Clare specialises in contemporary chamber music, composer collaboration and curating projects, including her own concert series, Behind the Mirror. During lockdown she wrote, arranged, recorded and produced her debut solo album The Isolated Cellist released by Stone Records in April 2021, a deeply personal collection of ancient & modern music for solo and layered cello gathered to perform to her local community. She studied Ancient & Modern History at Wadham College, Oxford, followed by postgraduate study at the Royal College of Music & the Hochshule für Künste in Bremen, Germany with internationally acclaimed cellist and teacher Alexander Baillie.

Sarah pursues a demanding and varied career as performer and educator. She has been sub principal flute in Britten Sinfonia since 2006, and is a founding member of the chamber group Chroma. Sarah has premiered innumerable works and commissions, often working in close collaboration with the composer. She has particularly enjoyed ongoing projects with Tom Ades, Oliver Knussen, James Macmillan and Steve Reich.

Please note, there is limited seating in the venue, so do come early!
