This two-day conference will comprise keynote speeches, a round table discussion and academic presentations on the guqin and its music by scholars from around the world.

The theme of the conference will be “New Directions in Guqin Music, Art, and Culture” but presentations on any theme or aspect of the qin are welcome.

The London Youlan Qin Society and China Arts Ltd, in association with its partners Goldsmiths University of London and others, will host a first London International Chinese Music Festival in London, United Kingdom, in 2023. The programme, as in our 2018 London International Guqin Festival, includes an academic conference on new research and findings into the guqin. For this Festival, we would like to extend an invitation to all qin scholars and researchers throughout the world to attend, present, and disseminate their research and recent projects at this conference.

Since the UNESCO listing of the qin as an Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003, the qin has seen two decades of changes and popularity increase. The changes associated with the elevation of the qin into the public consciousness has created new avenues and approaches to the musical, artistic, and cultural interpretation of its praxis, within China and beyond, where it has taken root and developed its own unique communities, practices, and outlooks.

It is now a good time to explore new avenues and perspectives that might be relevant to the qin in the future. In this conference, we hope to see innovative new insights into the qin’s praxis.
Day 1 (Saturday): New research in qin music (mainly papers), plus book launch

Day 2 (Sunday): Symposium (papers, roundtables, and keynotes) and guqin yaji (elegant gathering for all Festival participants)
Keynote speaker: TSE Chun Yan

Registration in RHB 274, the conference will be taking place in RHB309 and also rooms in the Music Department.

Fee is £70 for the full two days. Currently enrolled Goldsmiths and SOAS students have a 100% fee waiver, and Goldsmiths and SOAS staff members have a 50% fee waiver.

If you wish to attend only the conference, you can book via Eventbrite via the link.
