This performance and masterclass will emphasise the harmony between humans and nature and further understanding of the spirit of Chinese martial arts.
As summer revelry draws to a close, join Goldsmiths Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance in the last event of their summer series, Roaring Tiger, Soaring Crane, a martial arts performance and an optional practical masterclass.
This will be an exciting chance to witness our professional Chinese martial artists perform:
- Tai Chi
- Chinese Martial Arts
- Chinese Sword Dance
- "Emperor Qin's Troops" Terracotta Warriors
Audience members will also have the chance to take part in an optional Frolics of Five Animals (五禽戏 Wǔqínxì) practical martial arts masterclass following the performance.
Through this masterclass, participants will not only learn the actions of the Frolics of Five Animals, but also understand its underlying culture and philosophical applications, thereby better integrating its philosophy and the martial arts spirit into daily life and fitness practice.
The Frolics of Five Animals masterclass will include:
- An introduction to the origin and development of the Frolics of Five Animals philosophy
- An explanation of its status in traditional Chinese medicine, its health benefits and philosophy and its connection with Taoist thought.
- Practical teaching and demonstration
- Group practice
- Personal insight - students will have the opportunityto share their feelings and insights.
The five animal forms are:
- Tiger: fierce and ferocious - exercises upper limbs and waist and abdomen strength.
- Deer: graceful - strengthens leg muscles, enhances flexibility.
- Bear: steady - exercises back muscles, enhances physical strength.
- Monkey: agile - improves overall coordination and agility.
- Bird: elegant - exercises lower limbs, improves balance.
Participating artists: Bohan Yin, Zhen Li, Yining Chen and Yuhao Yin
