Goldsmiths Confucius Institute welcomes Jiaxuan Tang for an evening of Chinese music and an academic lecture on the history and evolution of one of China's oldest instruments.
This evening concert aims to take you on a multi-sensory journey from ancient China right through to the present day. Prepare to be encapsulated and enraptured by the powerful sound of the Chinese zither, also known to as the 'ancient zheng' or 'guzheng', that has a history dating back thousands of years.
This rare evening concert will be followed by an insightful lecture given by Goldsmiths Confucius Institute Music Teacher and guzheng specialist, Jiaxuan Tang.
With a history spanning in excess of 2,500 years, Zheng is one of the most enduring Chinese musical instruments worldwide. In listening to this specific instrument, we not only hear and are moved by the intense and evocative sounds emitted from its soundboard but also inadvertently begin to grasp some aspects of Chinese history and culture.
This one-hour event will include classical and modern pieces of zheng music performed by professional instrumentalists, and allow the listener to gain an insight into this unique instrument and its historical and cultural background. Audience members will leave with a comprehensive understanding of Chinese music.

About the musician and speaker:
Jiaxuan Tang is a Chinese musician based in London. She has received over 10 years of professional training in Guzheng performance and graduated from the China Conservatory of Music. She has been teaching Guzheng in China and UK since 2015, and giving performances across mainland China and European countries. She is Goldsmiths Confucius Institute resident guzheng teacher and performer.
