An Exhibition by Azna Solas May winner of the Christine Risley Award 2023

This exhibition builds on ideas emerging from my degree show ‘Patency To Love’, which was an exploration of the themes relating to the theatrical, queerness, and contemporary ways of looking towards the sensibility of the past. The lost figure in the degree show was a central character derived from a ghost, one that related to the past but could not be pinpointed fully.

With this current exhibition, perception shifts from the simple lost figure to more of a collected body or vision of work. There is a focus on the coalition of history as an aesthetic function of placing the queer body in a moment of time. What I mean by this is the work is attempting to shift dramatically from the single figure to more of a created environment and makeshift world. One where fictional narrative and queer desire interlink through storytelling and visual narratives of the otherworldly. A world that is drawn from a past vision but situated now in a contemporary space.
